The simple reason behind the growth of data roaming

Öykü Mengenli, Head of Group Roaming for TeliaSonera Eurasia, believes that despite being some way behind Europe. There are initiatives to both regulate international roaming and promote the services in order to increase its usage in Asia.

“Speaking of regulation, the official initiatives seem to be following the pattern of European tariff regulation discussions. Concerning Inbound Roaming Revenue, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia represent the key destinations for revenue source as these countries attract a great number of business roamers. Therefore, operators in the Region will be reluctant to decrease their IOTs in order not to lose their inbound revenue. At the same time, to get convenient rates at the retail side, they will make tough negotiations with the operators worldwide. To sum it up, they will fight not to lose their inbound roaming revenue whereas they will try to decrease their outbound costs, which define the complexity of roaming business,” she said.

“Data roaming generates a small share of total roaming revenue in the region. As there is a wealth of data applications emerging, data services will start to be more important for the operators. Therefore, implementing data roaming will be a key issue in the mid-term,” added Mengenli.
